28 Apr MUN Ki Baat @ SNIS
“In the 21st century, I believe the mission of the United Nations will be defined by a new, more profound awareness of the sanctity and dignity of every human life, regardless of race or religion.” –Kofi Annan
The Model United Nations (MUN) is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically role-play delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. The MUN involves substantial research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. It is meant to engage students and allow them to develop a deeper understanding of current world issues.
Most of us find it difficult to parade and express opinions. This is due to the lack of critical skill sets which are imperative towards ensuring uninhibited progress and firm self–belief. As one of the best international schools in Bangalore, we believe that it can be solved through exposure and orientation to such skill sets at a young age itself. Some skills that are practiced at SNIS: are diplomatic skills, general awareness of local, national, and current affairs, leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills-team work, and self-promotion.
SNISMUN is a big event on the calendar of Sharanya Narayani International School (SNIS), one of the top international schools in Bangalore. The MUN Club works towards organising the SNISMUN. The students have successfully organised the SNISMUN for the last three years. The MUN club focuses on training students and making them participate in local, national, and international level MUN conferences. Students participated in various conferences throughout the year that took place in the city. Many students won awards and recognitions that help them enhance their confidence and their portfolio as well.
This academic year our school hosted the first physical MUN at the SNIS school campus on 14th and 15th of October 2022. SNIS, being one of the best residential schools in Bangalore, had the opportunity of witnessing over 150 bright and young minds boldly taking on the challenge of discussing the world’s most demanding problems. SNISMUN has been a journey of growth for all who were a part of it. The organising committee members were all students of the Diploma Program (DP-1 and DP-2) who started preparations over a year ago, working hard to organise an event and make it a success. SNIS, being an IB school in Bangalore believes in teamwork and collaboration to bring out the sweet taste of creative ideas and fun. The delegates grew by coming up with innovative solutions and developing the courage to voice their opinions. The executive board and other participants grew by articulating and by learning different approaches to problems being discussed on a global issue. SNIS successfully provided a platform for expression and deliberation over the course of two days. Discussion ensued in five committees, United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the United Nation Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), International Press Corps (IPC) about consequential global and national issues. From the discussion of the Russia-Ukraine conflict to discussing viable mechanisms to end child abuse in South East Asia and combatting the transitional trafficking of illicit firearms, SNISMUN provided a platform for global thinking from different perspectives. The vigour of discussion in the committees proved to be full of anticipation and overflowing with ideas.
A delightful assortment of both first-timers and experienced MUNers flooded the foyers of Sharanya Narayani International School, both with equivalent gusto to engage in fruitful discussions. SNISMUN as an event was reflective of the core beliefs that the school holds apart from being an IGCSE and IB school in Bangalore – thinking school, inquiring minds, and what can be more enjoyable than assuming the persona of world leaders and trying to save the world.
In conclusion, SNISMUN was successful in achieving its objective of providing an open platform for debate and discussion with the help of our dedicated facilitators. We look forward to continuing to host SNISMUN at the best international school in Bangalore and seeing our young minds flourish into tomorrow’s leaders.
