Exploring the incredible machine called our body in the theme “Who we are”

“Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning”– William Arthur Ward. In my 6 years of  learning at Sharanya Narayani International School, which is the top international school in India, the perfect inquiry that helped me explore the fascinating world of human anatomy was under the theme “Who we are”. This inquiry made me change into a better person and showed me a way to adapt to the changes and growth for a better well-being. This was one of the most interesting inquiries I have learned in my PYP 5.

We embarked on an inquiry on human body systems through a visit to a museum in a medical college. I was shocked to see the body parts displayed in the museum which triggered me to dive deeper into human anatomy. The best part of this experience was my presentation on the powerful army team called “Immune System”. I chose this to make my fellow learners understand the importance of eating healthy food that would fight the bacteria and keep us fit and strong. This unit changed my eating habits and made me realize that vegetables and fruits are a part of our healthy well-being. I am very fortunate to be in SNIS, which is one of the best international schools in Bangalore, as we are favored with healthy food and in a week we have a cheat day where we get to eat junk food like (Pizza, French Fries and Burger). In this journey I developed my research and self management skills that helped me be organized and be aware of body mind-connections. Additionally, our school gives us the voice and choice to investigate the concepts that we are very much interested in and our teachers motivate us to think out of the box.

I enjoyed this inquiry because we did many thinking routines like Colour, Symbol, Image and Connect Extend Challenge that made me develop my thinking skills. We also did a Hexagonal thinking routine to connect our daily activities to show our understanding of interconnectedness of the body systems. Furthermore, our teacher made us measure temperature, Blood pressure, and heart beat rate per nano second where I was enriched with the knowledge of the medical terms – Diastolic and Systolic. I also enjoyed fun activities in our P.E class by playing games such as running races, jumping jacks and swimming to recognize resilience and work towards the changes that affect our body physically, mentally and emotionally.

At last I would like to mention that I displayed the profile of being reflective by making a habit of eating a balanced plate in my daily routine and completing all my job chores on time independently. I thank my school SNIS, the progressive international school in India and our teachers for making my learning fun and meaningful. It showed me that small actions make a big difference in me and make me a responsible learner.

Thank you SNIS
